Sheet Metal Apprentice at Local Union No. 25

Sheet Metal Workers are highly skilled craft persons, who sketch, design, fabricate and install all systems and components, starting with flat sheets of metal.  We install, test, balance and maintain all HVAC systems and items we fabricate. Our diversified trade includes welding and soldering, all types of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, clean rooms, architectural metal work such as siding and decking, metal roofs, awnings, canopies, coping, flashing and skylights, bathroom partitions, lockers, shelving, stainless steel kitchen equipment, hoods, counters, cabinets, walk in refrigerators and industrial sheet metal work such as tanks, vessels, hoppers and collectors.

The deadline for Applications and documentation uploads will be on May 24, 2024, at 4:00 PM.  

All educational and employment experiences are valuable, applicants should provide as much information as possible, i.e. W-2’s from current/past employers, Military Discharge Papers, Trade School Certificates, High School and College Transcripts.  All W-2’s for current/past employers listed on your application are required for every year that you worked there. (max. 5 most recent years) (Background Checks may be conducted) High School Transcripts are required even if you have not graduated.

This application has multiple sections to be filled out.  You can complete some of the sections and then come back and finish the rest of them.

Once we receive your completed application, and supporting documents, you will receive email notification approximately two (2) weeks prior to the examination date, that indicates the time, date and place of the examination.  If we do not receive all documentation required, you will not be asked to sit for the Examination.  

Requirements for a Local 25 Sheet Metal Apprentice

• All Applicants must be at least seventeen (17) years of age and must be capable of performing all required functions of the Sheet Metal Industry.  Being a Union construction worker is very physically demanding, so you must be able to meet the physical requirements.

• Must have a valid driver’s license with a photo on it and upload a copy.  You must have your own means of transportation to get to work on time every day. Our work is Monday through Friday, usually starting at 6:30 or 7:00 AM to 3:00 or 3:30 PM (depending on the jobsite).

• Must be eligible to work in the U.S.A legally.

• If you have a green card or work permit you must upload a copy to the Documents upload section of the application.

• Must submit a copy of your Social Security Card to the Documents upload section of the application.

• Must Pass a Drug Screening

• Must take a Written Mechanical Aptitude Examination (Part 1- Computation, Part 2 - Concepts & Application, Part 3 - Mechanical Reasoning, Part 4 - Space Relations.)

• Must be able to obtain SWAC and TWIC Cards. For more information on these you can visit, www.secureworker.com and https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic. (All applications will be done once you are accepted into the Apprenticeship Program.  Do not fill anything out prior to being accepting to Local 25.  You are not required to pay any of the fees associated with the SWAC and TWIC Cards.  Local 25 will pay those fees once you are accepted to the Apprenticeship Program.)

• Must submit W-2 forms from past & present employers (5 Yrs.) to the Documents upload section of the application.  If you have more than one (1) employer for each year, please scan all W-2s for the year in one file and upload it.

• Must submit Official High School transcripts, GED and any other School Transcripts or certifications (Trade school, college, welding, etc.) to the Documents upload section of the application.

• Must be able to work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.)

• Must be able to get to work in any of the eight counties in Local 25's jurisdiction; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Union Counties

• Must be able to endure the Physical demands of the construction Industry

• Must be available to work overtime, evenings, and weekends if required

• Must be able to be on your feet for 8 hours every day.

• Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs.

• Must be able to climb at least an 8-foot ladder

• Must be willing to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specifically hard hat, safety gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, work boots, neon colored clothing, but not limited to these items

 Additionally, applicants will be required to fill out applications online through our Application System and submit all required documentation.  Successful applicants will be required to appear for orientation, drug testing, SWAC/TWIC Card Application and possibly a physical examination.
